Well crap, that was a lot for a Sunday morning.

There should have been a warning, do no read until after coffee...lol

What a fantastic read. I know that you and I come from totally different points on the music map. We have a lot in common, but a lot not in common. For me, that is perfect, I can learn from you, gain new insights, just have fun learning.

We don't have to agree to respect each other

However, I still stand by the statement, The Clash, the only band that matters.

Thank you, Bob! If you listen to the voiceover, you'll see it's even crazier than the text 🤣Check it out if and when you've got a minute!

Your kind words mean so much to me, precisely because of what you say about our different backgrounds. The fact that we can spectacularly tease all those "divides" (as they like to call them --generational, cultural etc.) means that we are doing something right. Thanks for being here.

"only band that matters" 🤣🤣 well, as the great old philosopher Ciccone also said, we often find that, in life, "nothing really matters" 😂😂

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a voiceover here! I just did because you mentioned it in your response above. That was delightful!! First - I teach college writing, and I ALWAYS recommend reading your work out loud as part of the editing process, so I loved those bits of discovery/editing you do in the voiceover. Secondly- I love your ending “There may be two sides to every record, but there’s a million sides to every vinyl story.” Unknowingly, I purchased (and listened to) a used copy of War by U2 on its 42nd birthday 🎉 divine vinyl shop intervention? That’s a good vinyl story. Hahaha!

Money is definitely part of the equation/discussion. Collectibility as well. I get that the joy and experience is primary, but to rule out part of the discussion is ridiculous. I am not in any of those online groups - I just read a bunch of music Substacks lol - and after reading about those other online vinyl communities here, I would likely never join any as they seem way too pretentious.

Thank you so much, Kristin! I'm so glad you enjoyed the voiceover. I make a point of recording them in one take to keep it spontaneous, hence why the "live editing" 🤣 What you say is so true. I'd always felt I was a bit weird for needing to read it all out loud, but honestly, there are some typos and stuff I only pick up this way. What you say is reassuring especially as you've got the credentials to back it up. I also like to give the text a bit more air when recording the VO by laughing a bit at myself or the stuff I wrote 🤣 Kinda like a metatext sort of thing. It's all meant in jest, and it's all very honest at the same time.

There are definitely a lot of sides to every vinyl story, including our own personal vinyl "story/history", hence why my dig at those who say vinyl should be X or Y otherwise you're doing it all wrong". I call BS on all of that.

Substack is the way to go for music/record collecting discussions. Those social media groups (particularly on FB) are carnage -- sadly, especially for women, because you can imagine those neanderthals with the flannel shirts and socks under their beds are mostly frustrated males 😂

Thanks for reading and listening!

I love the extra tidbits and the spontaneity in the VO for sure! I will make a point to listen to more VOs in the future. It’s great to hear voices!

I would assume all the things you laid out here about the Facebook groups 😂

Yes to all of this. Substack has been a refreshing change from the gatekeeping and idiocy in so many other digital music spaces. I hope it stays that way. Rousing debates are good, but most people in those corners missed the assignment.

Cheers, Kev! 100% second that. I have my battles with Substack (like anyone else who spends most of their time here, I'd imagine) BUT I only need two seconds of scrolling on other platforms to come back here with the tail between my legs.

I don’t always listen to the voiceovers but this one was great!

“And we all know what they’re dirty with” in reference to the dirty socks under the bed! hahahaha! I literally LOL’d at that! (I’m such a child). And I love the editorializing at the end, the little juicy nuggets that the written post doesn’t provide!

Your point about online social media communities of so true - they really seem to attract the lowest common denominator and the trolls that are happy to ruin people’s day. I’m glad that hasn’t happened on Substack. Yet. Long may it continue.

Enjoy sunny Costa Rica!! (that’s purely a guess on my part - are we allowed?!?)

Oh and I completely forgot to address your final comment: not Costa Rica, no, but I'm closer to Costa Rica from here than I would be from London, for sure 😂 Watch this space!

Thank you, Mark! I’m really glad you enjoyed! Lol yes the socks thing had to be said 🤣🤣

The voiceovers are also a great way to edit the text. I always feel the text isn’t finished until I record the voiceover.

And yes, record collecting or music discussions here on Substack are a world away from what you can expect ok FB or, even worse, Reddit.

Thanks again!!

Definitely food (and a caffeinated beverage) for thought, Andy! Yeah, your V.O.s, para mi dinero, are now a must-listen! I'm so impressed at your diligence in writing out your "script" (article) while in-flight for that long! Gotta say I'm anxious to see where you ended up...oh, the stories I'm guessing you'll have!

Are you in Saskatoon? Saskatchewan? If you went to one of those places, why, we'd have to call you "sassy"!! ....Some more.😂Cheers, mon frère (oh, I DO so love Spanish)!👌😉

Thank you, Brad! I had a lot of fun with this one, especially the whole "Ciccone the philosopher" 🤣🤣 Well, I mention Heidegger, right? It's only fair to mention Ciccone as well! 😄

Writing while up in the sky was very cool. I had done it in the past, of course, but never on such a tight deadline!

Yes, big mystery, my location, and I can't wait to do the big reveal! Sassy through and through, from the cradle to the grave!

Hasta pronto 😉 and thanks again!

Madonna Louise Ciccone.....gotta admit, that's the only Ciccone I'm aware of! And, unless this "Heidegger" was in a '70s sitcom, not familiar.......Seriously. I'll have to do some boning up.......I'll also have to look up these philosophers!👋😎.....See ya!

LOL yes! THE Ciccone. The Mother of Reinvention, The Virgin and Geisha, the great philosopher Madonna Louise Ciccone! 😂😂 Heidegger was a "real" (what an ugly term) philosopher, though. Hence why I thought it'd be fun to make Madge pass as another one of 'em! 🤣🤣 Blame it on the jetlag!

I even missed that reference....duh! And, I've called her "Madge" a couple times in my articles! Wish I could blame my density on jetlag.....oh, sod it, accursed jet lag!😅Well, good....now, my homework has been dwindled down to peeking into this Heidegger character (uh, that isn't Cher, is it?!?)!

It was just me being very silly 🤪 The lyrics I quote are from her 2000 hit "Music" 😂 I thought it'd be fun to refer to her as a philosopher just for laughs. It'll be interesting to see if someone picks it up! I suspect it's perhaps one of those cases with Brits/Americans where our sense of humour doesn't always land as we expect!

Heidegger talked about the concept of "self" and is known for this whole theory around the concept of "being there". Lots of coffee if you're going to read up on him lol 😂

The other philosopher you mention, Sarkisian, explored notions of faith, particularly the question of whether we, collectively, as a human species, could entertain the notion of there being (which she borrowed from Heidegger) an afterlife following the break-up of a relationship. In essence, her question "do you believe in life after love?" still resonates with many readers to this day 🤣 A renowned music author (from Texas, I believe) once reflected on the astonishing number of times Sarkisian's theory had been revisited (remixed) over the years, and the length of those discussions 🤣🤣🤣 All right, I'll see myself out 😂

To quote the great Sarkisian: "If I could turn back time"....or, is that "tow-uhm" (requisite hair flip)? Let's check in on Jack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfqC28HcNjk
