Buying vinyl while on vacation is as beautiful as it can be stressful. Should you put your records in your suitcase? Do you need to declare them at customs? Some do's and don'ts for globetrotters.
Sage advice! As someone that's worked in aviation for almost 30 years now, I can confirm that luggage gets banged up at almost every step along the way. Not always due to carelessness or negligence, but because of the machinery of luggage sort systems and the way luggage is loaded onto aircraft.
Thank you! Yes, I figured you would have in-depth knowledge about the ins and outs of luggage and travel logistics. Thanks for confirming what I always suspected about luggage being tossed around from and at every corner :) Happy Easter!
And Happy Easter to you as well! If you know you might wind up doing some record shopping while you're on vacation, my best advice is to bring a whiplash mailer along. You can reasonably get 2-3 in each one. That'll give your new records quite a bit of protection.
My first experience doing this came last fall on a trip back from NYC. For whatever reason, I had to buy a copy of Manfred Mann's Earth Band's Solar Fire (just typing that makes me wonder about myself again) plus a copy of The Moody Blues' Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, and I used the layering method you described. All went smoothly until I got home, checked my vinyl vault, and discovered that I already had that Moodys album. So yay for packing, nay for memory!
That’s so funny (although it probably wasn’t that funny when you realised you already had it 😅). Was it exactly the same edition, i.e. same year, same country of issue, etc.? Because if there’s a slight difference between them (even if tiny), you can always say it was a fully conscious, intentional and deliberate choice as part of your collection strategy 😉
I so love that you are giving me a way out here. I haven't checked exactly (I also didn't tell my wife). But we're heading to Calgary in 2 weeks, and of course I'll be on the lookout for vinyl. But if I return with Solar Fire, I'll need more help from you, Andres!
The last time I flew (2019) I used the layering method and all worked out well! Since then, for trips by car or just around town, I've been using this awesome Technophobe DJ bag my wife gave me. It's very sturdy, thickly padded, and holds probably 10 LPs easily.
Thanks a lot for stopping by and for your comment! I’m glad to hear you had a good experience with the layering method. I should check out those bags you mention! Thanks!
😂 More records than clothes... that’s the way to go!

And yes, absolutely. That’s a very good idea, actually. Especially to protect corners.
Aww thankyou for the mention, that's so kind of you!
Thank YOU. I’m a huge fan of your work. Thank you so much for your comment and for subscribing! Means a lot to me.

😂😂 Well, if you do, you know where to find me. I’ll find you an alibi
I can still feel the panic I had at the airport when returning from Germany with LITERALLY 17 vinyl records in my carry on 😅😂 - great post!
