Are original pressings always better? What's the difference between a repress and a reissue? Today we start untangling some of vinyl's best kept secrets.
Thank you for all this info. I'm doing some collecting and using some of the resources you list. I'm interested in your next installment as i go down the road of collecting original pressings of country vinyl!
Country, eh, Terry? Have you heard (of) Dale McBride? He's Terry's (of Terry McBride and the Ride, and Brooks & Dunn songwriter) dad. Dale had several '70s albums on tiny Con Brio Records/Nashville. Mom used to manage Dale until his untimely death in the early '90s.
Dale's albums will likely be hard to find, as he was never on a major label (except for one single in the mid-'60s on Reprise/Warner Bros. after Dean Martin saw him singing in a club!), and was never a huge seller, but that means, if found, an album should be quite affordable.
Thanks Brad--I'll keep an eye out for Dale's records. My dive into country has been long coming and will be long lived, I hope. That doesn't mean I'm giving up my obsession with Bowie, or Patti Smith, or certainly early King Crimson and Pink Floyd!
Dale's music was certainly easy to take, and he was a great personality. When he sang his John Hartford/Glen Campbell cover, he started it by singing, "Well, it's knowin' that your door is always open and your furniture is gone!" Fun searchin', Terry!
Thank you, Terry! I’m really glad to hear you’re finding this space useful. Great that you’re collecting original pressings of country music! That’s awesome. Any particular albums you’d like to recommend?
I'll have a story on Medium soon, over on The Riff, concerning Tammy Wynette's D-I-V-O-R-C-E. IT'S WAY TOO GODD AS ARE HER FIRST FOUR LP'S Sorry for the Caps
Great piece as always! I think the frustrating answer for this is that it depends on the record. Sometimes the OG is best, sometimes the repress/reissue helps. Guess you might as well collect them all!
Thank you, Kiley! Much, much appreciated. Yes, I completely agree that it really depends on the record in question. With some albums I really like, I try to get a couple of different editions to compare. Sometimes you can really hear the difference, especially if the respective years of release are far apart.

Dale was a very pop/country/Glen Campbell-type, and his music is readily available: https://open.spotify.com/album/4SWiKbbAkHubPax6mDFPaL?si=2c98c50e66554924 Enjoy!
