Beautifully stated Andres. Vinyl lovers get placed in the same category as coffee lovers, maybe for a similar reason. Having to make something slowly and with intention in a pour over or espresso machine instead of a drip machine is making a choice to stay in the present moment. I do love streaming playlists for parties or the gym.

Thank you!! That’s such a cool analogy. I hadn’t thought of it that way, but it makes a lot of sense! And yes, I agree: I also enjoy streaming playlists at parties or at the gym. Thanks for your comment and for stopping by!

In my case, streaming services have given me the opportunity to discover new and different music, which have also lead me to make the commitment to build a playlist every fortnight. I mainly listen to music on the go and do not consider myself as an audiophile, but a music lover. However, I really appreciate and respect those like you, who make listening to music an experience to all 5 senses.

Thank you, Marc! Streaming services have a lot of advantages, that's undeniable. I also really value those like you who create playlists, because it's an art in itself. Playlist creators and vinyl lovers are so intertwined in history (e.g. DJing). In a sense, with playlists, you also have to make hard choices, so our perspectives are not too dissimilar. I guess the point I was trying to make is that, for some people, listening to music has become a bit like channel surfing: aimlessly going from one record to the next, without any kind of purpose or intentionality. Thanks, as always, for reading and for your valuable contributions!

Thanks for the article! The intentionality required for vinyl definitely changes the listening experience for me, independent of the sonic qualities.

Thank you, Matt! Absolutely: intentionality adds a whole new layer of meaning to the music, and shapes our relationship with what we hear.

While I’m very intentional with my listening most of the time, Spotify is a lifeline at a time when I can’t afford to buy everything I love. Someday that may change, but until then I will keep listening and spreading the word on my favorite music!

Thanks, Jeremy. I think intentionality is key, regardless of format. That’s mainly what I was trying to get at. And yes, absolutely: for me it’s also impossible to afford all the records I want to listen to. I grew up during one of the worst economic crises in modern history (2001 Argentina), and had to pay for stuff using government bonds (there was no money left at all). Food stamps and the like. It was like a post-war kind of society. It is perhaps from that experience of coming from absolutely nothing, from that place of having really struggled, that I learned (or was forced) to choose, to become more selective. In life. Music being no exception 😉 Thanks, as always, for reading!
